Shipyard Employment Safety: Confined Spaces, Fire, Fall Protection, and PPE

What your employer must give you

This course teaches shipyard employment safety awareness — how hazards change as vessel conditions change, why multi-employer communication matters, and the daily decisions that keep you inside the awareness boundary. The site-specific procedures, authorizations and rescue plans belong to your employer. Make sure you can get each one:

• Site-specific orientation for the vessel, yard and task you are assigned to.
• Confirmation of which Part 1915 controls apply to your work area and task.
• Competent-person testing, posting and authorization before confined- or enclosed-space entry.
• Hot-work authorization, fire-watch assignment and the site fire safety plan before any hot work begins.
• A hazard assessment and the specific PPE it requires — eye, face, body, hand, foot, respiratory and lifesaving protection.
• Fall-protection procedures, approved anchorage points and tie-off requirements for your task.
• A rescue plan and confirmation of who is trained and equipped to execute it.
• A clear, retaliation-free procedure for stopping unsafe work and reporting hazards.
• Multi-employer coordination whenever your work affects, or is affected by, another employer or crew on the vessel.

If you cannot get these, stop and ask before you continue. This course supports awareness-level training only — it does not replace your employer's site-specific procedures, competent-person direction, space-entry controls, fire safety plan, PPE hazard assessment, fall-protection procedures, rescue plan or supervision.
