What your employer must give you
This course teaches the New York standard and how prevention, de-escalation, emergency response and supervisor duties are supposed to work. The specific policy, people, exits and devices belong to your employer, and section 27-e requires them to provide these. Make sure you can find each one before you finish:
- Your employer’s written retail workplace violence prevention policy, and where to read it — it must be given to you on hire and annually after that.
- Whether your employer has 50 or more New York retail employees, because that is what decides whether your training repeats every year or every two years.
- The primary and an alternate route for reporting a threat or an incident, including one to use when the concern involves your normal contact.
- Your store’s actual emergency contacts and when to call 911 rather than an internal number.
- The real exit list or floor map for your store, and the emergency meeting or assembly places.
- The evacuation and sheltering procedures for your actual work area — a generic diagram is not a substitute.
- The type and location of any alarm or emergency device in your store, and how to operate it.
- Whether a silent response button applies to you — it is required only where the employer has 500 or more New York retail employees, from January 1, 2027 — and if so, the device and how to use it.
- Your store’s areas with previous security problems and the controls now in place for them.
- Who your supervisors and managers are for emergency purposes, and the escalation chain.
- The security contacts and the response process your employer uses.
- The written training materials in your primary language, where NYSDOL publishes a model translation for it.
If your employer has not given you these, ask. Reporting a workplace violence concern in good faith is protected — section 27-e requires the policy to state that retaliation against you for doing so is unlawful.
Completion documents interactive retail workplace violence prevention training for New York retail workplaces under Labor Law §27-e. It is a Certificate of Completion. It is not a New York certification, a state-approved credential or a licence, and it does not by itself make an employer compliant — the employer must still adopt and distribute its written policy, supply its store-specific information, schedule the training during paid work time and keep the correct assignment cadence.
