Frequently Asked Questions
What is ELDT and when did it start?
ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) is a federal requirement that began February 7, 2022. It requires new CDL applicants to complete training from a registered provider before taking the skills test.
Do I need ELDT if I already have a CDL?
No, if you held a CDL before February 7, 2022, you're exempt. You also don't need ELDT to renew. However, upgrading from Class B to A or adding certain endorsements may require ELDT.
Can I get a CDL without ELDT training?
Not anymore, unless you qualify for an exemption (military, pre-2022 CDL holder, farm waiver, etc.). All new CDL applicants must complete ELDT from a registered training provider.
Is ELDT training the same as CDL school?
Essentially yes. ELDT is the federal standard that CDL schools must meet. Most CDL schools are ELDT-compliant and registered on the TPR. Just verify registration before enrolling.
