ELDT Training Requirements
Since February 7, 2022, the FMCSA requires all new CDL applicants to complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a registered training provider before taking the CDL skills test.
- Theory (classroom) instruction on safe driving practices
- Behind-the-wheel (BTW) training on a range
- Behind-the-wheel training on public roads
- Completion reported to FMCSA Training Provider Registry
Age Requirements
Intrastate (Within State)
18+ Years
Drive commercial vehicles within your state only
Interstate (Across States)
21+ Years
Drive commercial vehicles across state lines
CDL Classes
Class A CDL
Required for combination vehicles with GCWR of 26,001+ lbs if the towed vehicle is over 10,000 lbs. Examples: Tractor-trailers, truck and trailer combinations.
Class B CDL
Required for single vehicles with GVWR of 26,001+ lbs or towing a vehicle under 10,000 lbs. Examples: Straight trucks, large buses, dump trucks.
Class C CDL
Required for vehicles transporting 16+ passengers or hazardous materials. Examples: Small passenger vans, hazmat vehicles.
