TL;DR

Found a CDL re-entry program but nervous about calling? This word-for-word phone script helps you complete the call in under 5 minutes and dramatically increases your chances of enrollment.

Warning:

If a school is not on the federal registry, you cannot get your license. All schools listed on CDL Schools USA are verified against the 2025 FMCSA database.

The Call That Changes Everything

You've been out for 6 months. Your PO gave you the green light to apply for jobs. You found Goodwill, STRIVE, or your local workforce office in our directory. But when you call, the intake coordinator says:

"We need your background check results, letter from your PO, and proof of address. Can you email those over?"

You hang up. You don't have email. Your PO never mentioned a letter. You feel like you wasted their time.

This happens to 40% of formerly incarcerated people who call re-entry programs. The program WANTS to help you, but if you don't have the right information ready, they can't move forward with you.

This script fixes that.

Before You Call: The 3-Minute Prep

Don't dial until you have these 4 things written down:

1. Your Conviction Details (Simplified)

You don't need to confess your life story. Write this down EXACTLY:

  • Offense: [Felony/Misdemeanor + simplified charge]
  • Year convicted: [YYYY]
  • Year released: [YYYY]
  • State: [XX]

Example: "Felony theft, convicted 2019, released 2023, Texas."

2. Your Availability

  • • Can you attend full-time (M-F, 8 AM–5 PM) for 3–4 weeks?
  • • Do you have transportation or need help with bus passes/gas cards?
  • • Are you working part-time currently?

3. Your Probation/Parole Status

  • • Are you on probation or parole? (Yes/No)
  • • Do you have permission to work? (Yes/No)
  • • Do you have curfew or travel restrictions?

4. Your Contact Info

  • • Working phone number (with voicemail set up!)
  • • Email (if you have one)
  • • Mailing address

The Phone Script (Word-for-Word)

Opening (First 30 Seconds)

Say This:

"Hi, my name is [Your Name]. I'm calling because I saw that [Program Name] helps people with criminal records get their CDL. I'm interested in enrolling. Is this the right place to start?"

Why it works: You're direct. You're not hiding your past. You're showing you researched them (big positive signal for intake staff).

The Intake Questions (They Will Ask These)

Q: "Can you tell me about your background?"

Your Script:

"Yes. I have a [felony/misdemeanor] for [charge type] from [year]. I was released in [year] / I'm currently on parole. I've been working on getting stable housing and employment. I'm looking to get my CDL because I know trucking companies hire people with records, and I want a career, not just a job."

Q: "Are you currently on probation or parole?"

Your Script (if yes):

"Yes, I'm on [probation/parole] until [month/year]. My [PO] has already approved me to work and travel for job training. I can get a letter from him/her if you need one."

Q: "Do you have any disqualifying offenses?"

Disqualifying for CDL:

DUI in last 3 years, vehicular homicide, using a commercial vehicle to commit a felony, refusing a drug test.

NOT Disqualifying (in most states):

Theft, assault, drug possession, weapons charges (if they don't involve a commercial vehicle).

Your Script (if you're clear):

"No, my charge wasn't related to driving, drugs while driving, or commercial vehicles. I'm eligible for a CDL in [your state]."

Your Turn to Ask Questions

After they've screened you, flip the script. Ask these 3 questions:

1. "What documents do I need to bring for intake?"

You're listening for: Photo ID, Social Security card, proof of address, background check authorization, PO letter (if applicable).

2. "How long is the program and is there job placement at the end?"

You're listening for: Training duration (3–4 weeks is standard), whether they partner with trucking companies, graduation hiring rate.

3. "Is there a wait list, and when is the next class?"

If wait is 6+ months, ask if they can refer you to another program. If class starts soon, ask what you need to do NOW to secure a spot.

Closing the Call (Last 30 Seconds)

Say This:

"Thank you so much. Just to confirm: I need to [repeat their next step, e.g., 'email my PO letter to [email protected] and come to orientation Monday at 10 AM']. Is there anything else I should bring or prepare?"

"Perfect. I really appreciate your help. I'll see you [day/time]. Can I get your name in case I have questions before then?"

Why it works: You just demonstrated you're organized, you listen, and you follow through. That intake coordinator is now on your side.

What If They Say No?

"We can't help people with your type of conviction."

Your Response:

"I understand. Can you recommend another program in [city] that works with people in my situation? Or is there a waiting period where I'd be eligible to re-apply?"

Half the time, they'll give you a referral. The other half, they'll say "Try again in 6 months after you show more stability."

"We have a 6-month wait list."

Your Response:

"Got it. Can I get on that list now? And in the meantime, is there another program you'd recommend, or something I can do to prepare—like getting my learner's permit or taking CDL practice tests online?"

Why it works: You're still moving forward. You're not letting a wait list stop you.

📞 After the Call: The Follow-Up That Doubles Your Enrollment Rate

Within 24 hours, send a thank-you text or email (if they gave you contact info):

"Hi [Name], this is [Your Name]. Thanks for walking me through the CDL program today. I'm gathering [documents they mentioned] and will be at orientation on [date]. Excited to get started!"

Set a reminder to follow up 3 days before orientation to confirm.
