Construction Trucking Segments
Dump Truck Operations

Concrete Mixer Trucks
Transit mixers (8-12 yards), volumetric mixers. Unique: continuous drum rotation, 90-minute delivery rule, washout facilities required.
Heavy Equipment Transport
Lowboy, RGN, step deck, multi-axle trailers. Loads: excavators, bulldozers, cranes. Requires oversize/overweight permits, escort vehicles, route surveys, specialized securement.
CDL Requirements
- Class B CDL: Single vehicle >26,000 lbs GVWR (most dump trucks, concrete mixers)
- Class A CDL: Combination >26,000 lbs with trailer >10,000 lbs (transfer dumps, heavy haul)
- Tank Endorsement (N): Required for concrete mixers (rotating drum = tank under federal definition)

Hours of Service: The Construction Exemption
Short-Haul Exemption (49 CFR 395.1(e)(1)):
- Operate within 150 air-mile radius of normal work reporting location
- Return to same location within 14 hours
- 11-hour driving limit still applies
- Most dump truck and concrete operations qualify
- Heavy equipment transport usually does NOT (longer distances)
- ELD Exemption: Short-haul = no ELD required (but need time records)
Weight and Dimension Regulations
- Federal Bridge Formula: Limits weight based on axle spacing
- State Variations: Some allow higher weights on state roads, seasonal restrictions
- Permits: Annual for routine overweight, single-trip for heavy equipment, superload for extreme
Job Site Safety
PPE Required: Hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe boots, safety glasses, gloves.
