DOT reasonable suspicion training prepares supervisors of CDL drivers to recognize physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators that may justify a drug or alcohol test under FMCSA rules. Regulation 49 CFR 382.603 requires supervisors who may make these determinations to receive at least 60 minutes on alcohol misuse and 60 minutes on controlled-substance use. This online course covers observable signs, documentation, post-determination procedures, and compliance scenarios so employers can act consistently and defensibly. After completing the course and passing the assessment, the learner receives an instant certificate for audit and compliance records.

What does 49 CFR 382.603 require?
Under 49 CFR 382.603, each employer must ensure that every person designated to supervise CDL drivers receives at least 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse and at least 60 additional minutes on controlled-substance use. The training is used to decide whether reasonable suspicion exists to require a driver to undergo testing under DOT/FMCSA rules.
CDL Schools USA's DOT Reasonable Suspicion Training is built as a 2-hour online supervisor course for fleet managers, dispatchers, safety directors, DERs, terminal managers, and trucking-company owners who need a documented training record before a DOT audit, driver incident, or new-supervisor onboarding deadline.
Who needs this training?
The training is for anyone the employer may rely on to make a reasonable-suspicion call for a CDL driver. That commonly includes supervisors, fleet managers, dispatchers, safety managers, DERs, and owner-operators who manage other drivers.
What does the certificate prove?
The certificate gives the employer a dated training record showing that the learner completed the alcohol and controlled-substance awareness topics required for supervisor reasonable-suspicion determinations. Keep it with audit and driver qualification records.
Why complete it before an incident?
Reasonable-suspicion decisions are time-sensitive. Training before an incident helps the supervisor observe physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators, document facts clearly, and follow testing procedures without improvising under pressure.

Do I need this if I only have one or two CDL drivers?
Yes. The requirement in 49 CFR 382.603 is triggered by employing CDL drivers subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing — not by the size of your fleet. There is no small-carrier exemption. If one person supervises your drivers, that person needs the training, and in a small company they are often also the Designated Employer Representative.
Who exactly counts as a supervisor?
Anyone in a position to observe a driver and determine that a test is warranted — dispatchers, fleet managers, safety directors, terminal managers and owner-operators who employ drivers. It follows the function, not the job title.
How many seats do I need, and what does a team purchase include?
One seat per supervisor. Seats are $49 individually, $199 for 5 and $349 for 10, and every learner receives their own certificate for your audit file. For more than 10, contact us and choose the team training topic. All sales are final — see our refund policy.

Understanding the Law: 49 CFR § 382.603
Direct citations from federal DOT regulations
49 CFR § 382.603 - Training for supervisors
"Each employer shall ensure that all persons designated to supervise drivers receive at least 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse and receive at least an additional 60 minutes of training on controlled substances use. The training shall cover the physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators of probable alcohol misuse and use of controlled substances."
Per § 382.603(a), supervisors must receive training on: physical indicators (bloodshot eyes, flushed face, odor of alcohol), behavioral indicators (slurred speech, impaired coordination), and the 2-hour testing window requirement.
Hour 2: Controlled Substances
Per § 382.603(b), training must cover: the 5 DOT drug panel (marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, PCP), physical and behavioral signs, and the 32-hour testing window for drug determinations.
Important Interpretation
Federal law supersedes state marijuana laws for CDL drivers. Even in states where marijuana is legal, CDL drivers performing safety-sensitive functions are prohibited from using marijuana under 49 CFR § 382.213. Supervisors must be trained to recognize marijuana impairment regardless of state legalization status.

15+ years in transportation safety & regulatory compliance
This course was developed in collaboration with active DOT auditors and safety professionals. The curriculum is reviewed annually to ensure compliance with the latest FMCSA guidance and reflects real-world scenarios encountered during roadside inspections and compliance audits.
All supervisors and managers who may need to make reasonable suspicion determinations for safety-sensitive employees must complete this training. This includes dispatchers, fleet managers, safety directors, terminal managers, and any person designated to determine whether an employee must be tested for alcohol or drugs.
Is this training DOT compliant?
Yes. This training meets all requirements of 49 CFR Part 382.603, which requires at least 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse and 60 minutes on controlled substances use. Our curriculum is reviewed annually by compliance professionals.
How long do I have to complete the course?
You have lifetime access to the course. You can complete it at your own pace, pause and resume at any time. Your progress is saved automatically. Most users complete the course in a single 2-hour session.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. Upon successful completion of all modules and quizzes (70% minimum passing score), you will receive a certificate that you can download, print, and provide to your employer or auditors. The certificate is audit-ready and documents the specific training topics covered.
Does reasonable suspicion training expire?
No, DOT regulations do not require renewal of reasonable suspicion training. However, many employers provide refresher training every 2-3 years to keep supervisors current on best practices and any regulatory changes. We recommend periodic refresher training.
Can I take this training on mobile devices?
Yes, our training platform is fully mobile-responsive. You can complete the course on smartphones, tablets, or computers. This is especially useful for drivers and supervisors who need to complete training while at truck stops or on the road.
What if a driver tests positive after I make a determination?
Your role as a supervisor is to document observable signs and refer for testing based on those observations. This training teaches you proper documentation procedures. A negative test result does not invalidate your reasonable suspicion determination—you acted appropriately based on observed indicators.
Do I need two supervisors for a reasonable suspicion determination?
For alcohol testing, 49 CFR § 382.307(c) requires two trained supervisors to make the determination when reasonably available. For controlled substances, only one trained supervisor is required. This training covers the specific requirements for both scenarios.
What's the penalty for not having trained supervisors?
Failure to ensure supervisor training is a violation of 49 CFR Part 382. Penalties can reach up to $16,000 per violation for willful non-compliance. Additionally, if an impaired driver causes an accident and your supervisors weren't trained, the company faces significantly increased liability exposure.
How does marijuana legalization affect reasonable suspicion training?
Federal DOT regulations prohibit marijuana use for all safety-sensitive employees regardless of state legalization. CDL drivers cannot use marijuana even in states where it's legal. This training covers marijuana indicators and reminds supervisors that state laws do not override federal DOT requirements.
Is this training required for owner-operators?
If you operate as a sole proprietor with no employees, you don't technically need reasonable suspicion training (there's no one to supervise). However, if you have any CDL drivers working for you, even one, supervisory training is required for whoever oversees those drivers.
