ELD Decertification April 14, 2026: Is Your Device on the Death List?

On February 4, 2026, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration removed nine ELD devices from its Registered ELD List—the official certification that allows devices for commercial motor vehicle operation. With a hard deadline of April 14, 2026, carriers using these devices face immediate out-of-service orders if they haven't transitioned to compliant alternatives.

The Decertified Devices: Is Yours Listed?

Device NameManufacturerCommon Carriers Affected
AirELDAirIQ Inc.Agricultural, seasonal
GTS ELDGlobal Tracking SolutionsSmall fleets, owner-operators
TruckX ELD (Legacy)TruckX Inc.Regional carriers

RoadRunner HOSRoadRunner TelematicsExpedited freight

CargoMax LoggerCargoMax SolutionsDry van, flatbed

LogMaster ProLogMaster SystemsPrivate fleets

Critical note: Many of these devices continue operating under "grandfathered" or "legacy" exemptions that expired with decertification. Carriers assuming compliance based on past registration are operating illegally.

The April 14, 2026 Deadline: Zero Tolerance

FMCSA established a 70-day transition window. After April 14, 2026:

  • Using decertified ELD = Automatic OOS violation
  • No grace period for "I didn't know" excuses
  • No roadside repair option (unlike mechanical defects)
  • Immediate cessation of CMV operation until compliant ELD installed

Why Devices Get Decertified

Data Integrity

  • Inability to transfer logs to DOT systems
  • Data corruption during download
  • Missing location history
  • Editable records (tamper-proof violated)

HOS Calculation Errors

  • Incorrect duty status transitions
  • Missing adverse driving exemptions
  • Wrong 70/8 or 60/7 calculations
  • Yard move misclassification

UI Failures

  • Unreadable driver displays
  • Missing required annotations
  • Inaccessible edit history
  • Failed malfunction reporting

The Hidden Cost of ELD Transition

Total Realistic Cost for 50-Vehicle Fleet: $75,000-$150,000

Direct Costs:
  • New ELD hardware: $300-$800/vehicle
  • Installation: $150-$400/vehicle
  • Driver training: 2-4 hours/driver
  • Data migration: $500-$2,000 fleet-wide
Operational Costs:
  • Vehicle downtime: $500/day
  • Driver productivity loss: $200/driver
  • Back-office reconfiguration: $2,000-$5,000
  • Integration with dispatch/TMS: $1,000-$10,000
