    Welcome to Scaffold Safety and Competent Person Awareness. This ninety-minute course introduces the OSHA construction scaffold topics workers and supervisors must understand before scaffold work is planned, used, changed, or inspected. You will learn the difference between user awareness and employer-designated competent person duties, how to recognize common scaffold hazards, and when work must stop until a qualified or competent person resolves the issue. The course has three modules. Each module contains engagement checks, a three-question module quiz, and the course ends with a randomized final assessment. You must earn at least eighty percent for a completion record. This course does not, by itself, appoint anyone as a competent person, authorize scaffold erection or dismantling, or replace employer site-specific training.

  2. 02Platforms, Access, Fall Protection, and Falling Objects

    30 min

    Module two focuses on the controls workers usually see and touch: platforms, planks, guardrails, personal fall arrest systems, safe access, falling-object protection, and work practices that keep people away from scaffold edges, openings, and drop zones. The purpose is not to memorize every scaffold dimension. The purpose is to recognize when the scaffold system no longer matches the safe plan.

    The final module turns scaffold knowledge into a daily decision process. Workers and supervisors need a repeatable way to ask: who inspected this scaffold, what changed, what controls are missing, who is authorized for the task, and what record should the employer keep? A certificate can support the training file, but the employer still owns site-specific procedures, competent-person designation, inspections, and corrective actions.

How often does a scaffold have to be inspected?

1926.451(f)(3) requires a competent person to inspect scaffolds and scaffold components for visible defects before each work shift, and after any occurrence that could affect structural integrity.

Does this course make someone the competent person?

No. The employer designates the competent person and gives them authority to take prompt corrective action. This course builds awareness of what that role has to watch for.

Who is required to be trained under 1926.454?

Employees who work on scaffolds must be trained by a person qualified in the subject to recognise the hazards, and employees who erect, move, dismantle or inspect scaffolds must be trained by a competent person. Retraining is required when conditions or the employee’s proficiency change.

Does it cover scaffold design or load calculations?

No. Design, capacity and erection decisions stay with your qualified and competent personnel on site.
